[Global Connection] Two Encounters with Mr. Bei Junqi

—— The Gentle Power of a Timeless Social Catalyst

October 2024 is a month I will never forget. During that month, I was in Hong Kong, where I met Mr. Bei Junqi twice, sitting side by side and sharing dinner. I personally felt the calm and warm strength that emanated from him. It was not the oppressive aura of an authority figure, nor the demeanor of a celebrity, but a deep-seated empathy and support that naturally radiated from his lifelong dedication to promoting sports, public welfare, and cultural endeavors. As a creator and organizer engaged in cross-cultural communication and martial arts promotion for a long time, I cherish such opportunities immensely and feel incredibly fortunate for it.

The first time was on October 12, 2024, when I was invited to attend the third anniversary celebration of the International Tai Chi Academy (Hong Kong). This ceremony was led by Master Lin Wenhui and gathered heavyweight figures from the Tai Chi community from various countries and regions. I originally thought this would be a purely internal martial arts event, but to my surprise, I saw Mr. Bei Junqi at the event, sitting at the same table as me. At that moment, I was a bit astonished—this elder, who appeared gentle and was dressed in a neat suit, was none other than Bei Junqi, who has long served as the President of the Hong Kong Olympic Committee, the President of the Hong Kong Taekwondo Association, and the founding President of the Hong Kong Sports Journalists Association.

During the event, Mr. Bei did not seek the spotlight or promote himself. He quietly stood in the background, always smiling, supporting Master Lin Wenhui and all the students. I was fortunate to take a photo with him; in the picture, I am wearing a red outfit while he is in a suit, and we are standing close to each other, sharing an unspoken understanding.

Just twelve days later, on October 24, 2024, I was invited again to dinner with Master Lin Wenhui and Mr. Hong Runyuan. This meal was personally initiated by Mr. Bei Junqi, held in a quiet location with a gentle atmosphere. There were no exaggerated ceremonial feelings, nor was there a sense of distance typical of "elite gatherings." Mr. Bei communicated with us as equals, his tone calm yet logically clear, and every segment of his speech revealed a profound concern for the development of martial arts and strong support for grassroots cultural organizations. That dinner was one of the warmest exchanges I have experienced in recent years. Sitting at the table, I suddenly realized: the truly great figures in this world often do not flaunt their brilliance; their existence is a form of stability, a force that makes you willingly move forward.

I subsequently reviewed a large amount of information about Mr. Bei Junqi, and the more I learned, the more I admired him. Since the 1970s, he has been active in Hong Kong's sports and charity sectors, holding key positions such as President of the Hong Kong Wushu Federation, Chairman of the Hong Kong Olympic Committee, President of the Hong Kong Taekwondo Association, Founding President of the Hong Kong Sports Journalists Association, and Chairman of the Hong Kong Athletics Association. His presence can be seen at every major sports event and important cultural activity in Hong Kong; his name has almost become a symbol of "the spirit of Hong Kong's sports and culture." But what touches me the most is that he has always remained low-key and composed, never taking credit for himself.

His numerous social positions are astonishing: President of the Hong Kong Football Association, Chairman of the Hong Kong Athletics Association, Founding President of the Hong Kong Sports Journalists Association, President of the Hong Kong Wushu Federation, Honorary President of the Hong Kong Sports Federation and Olympic Committee, and he has even held management positions in the Hong Kong Jockey Club and various youth organizations. By ordinary standards, this is already an impressive group of achievements that many would find unattainable, yet Mr. Bei has always acted in the simplest manner. He has never turned down a sincere invitation, has never treated young people with indifference, and has never put up defenses or flaunted his status.

This is exactly why I am particularly grateful that he is willing to serve as the honorary president of the "Australian International Qigong Tai Chi Academy." This academy, which I founded myself, is located in the Southern Hemisphere and has limited resources, but has always adhered to the rigorous promotion of Chinese martial arts. We are not a mainstream institution, do not receive government subsidies, and have no large-scale commercial promotion, yet we have received recognition from a towering figure like Mr. Bei Junqi. This cross-regional, cross-cultural, and cross-generational recognition has made me realize that the true spirit of Tai Chi lies not in the forms and techniques, but in the integration and communication of the mind, intention, and energy.

I am particularly touched by his support for Master Lin Wenhui. Master Lin is an important guide on my Tai Chi journey, and for many years he has tirelessly promoted Tai Chi in Hong Kong. Mr. Bei not only has long supported Master Lin's Tai Chi endeavors but has also attended events in person multiple times. As a former high-ranking sports official, he could have relegated Tai Chi to the category of "marginal traditional sports" and overlooked it, but he did not. He understands the nourishing effects of Tai Chi on both body and mind, comprehends the philosophical depth behind it, and truly recognizes the long-term impact of grassroots efforts on societal health.

Mr. Bei Junqi is, in my heart, a model figure. He is not the kind of person who shocks everyone upon his arrival, but rather a gentle elder who influences everyone around him through his actions. He encouraged me to keep going, saying, "Your persistence is very important." This一句话 is enough to become the source of my unwavering motivation for the past ten years.

In this world, there exists a type of person who is like "still waters that run deep," seemingly calm on the surface, yet truly leading the times. Mr. Bei Junqi is such an individual. He is not a media figure who calls the winds and summons the rain, nor is he a frequent headline newsmaker, but for decades, he has been nurturing the foundations of sports and culture in Hong Kong with unwavering dedication, demonstrating through continuous action that true drivers of change do not shout from the front, but cultivate diligently behind the scenes.

Two encounters, for me, are an honor, an inspiration, and a form of spiritual inheritance. I believe that in the countless days and nights ahead, promoting Tai Chi, writing cultural works, and establishing publishing platforms, I will continue to cherish the strength and trust that this social promoter has given me.
